Elizabeth Leigh Scherman holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Washington, Seattle. Her research focuses on representations of identity in cinema and other media. She is particularly interested in portrayals of disability and atypical embodiment as found in cinema targeted to children. She has been published in academic journals and edited anthologies. Dr. Scherman teaches at Bates College south of Seattle, and at UC Berkeley with the Academic Talent Development Program through the Graduate School of Education.

She has had several plays produced, including two under a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, and she is currently working on a novel for middle-grade readers.
